Technical Validation Issues
Central elements of the Technical Validation work package had been exchange, information and demand analysis in direct contact with the community, creating online information resources, and evaluation of specific aspects:

The direct contact was developed particularly intensively during the
workshops. Sessions focused on the experiences made with existing OAI
implementations, the problems, caused by special demands of the communities,
and tool implementations experiences. Representatives of the OAI talked
about their new developments and future plans.
With these meetings a large
need of fundamental information became visible. For this reason a tutorial
"OAI and OAI-PMH for Beginners" was developed and extended to an Online-Tutorial,
and an online "Technical Validation Questionnaire" installed with the
objective to make an overview on status, experiences and future plans
regarding European OAI implementations available. |

Furthermore this work package provides information from those projects that
have already dealt with the integration of existing technologies. An
information space was created in form of a searchable web-based database
on projects, software, implementations, and services, that allows
interested parties to search for potential project partners, for metadata
standards and for information about interoperability issues and to share
project developments. |

Apart from this offer for self-registration to encourage exchange,
systematic inventories of repositories, services and tools were gathered
to provide an overview of European activities on OAI in relation to
worldwide activities. |

Reports on own experiences with the metadata
harvesting pilot or with the implementation of OAI Services focusing on
different objectives (search into all repositories with a
specific language / print on demand) as well as experiences made with
available software tools may contribute to the promotion and further
implementation of OAI based open archives in Europe. |

This report is describes the Technical Validation part of the OA-Forum project. It is the second of two reports dealing with the technical issues arising from metadata harvesting interoperating services. |
